The Geek Ghoul’s Guide to Giving Away the Ghosts
Posted by: Darcy in 2009 Debs, Books, YA authors, book giveaway, contest, tags: 2009 Debs, book giveaway, contest, Megan Crewe, Saundra MitchellIt’s a ghastly day in northeast Indiana, where Geek Girl Darcy makes her haunted home. It’s cold. It’s rainy. It’s windy. The perfect day to curl up with a ghostly good story. And, lucky me (!), I’ve got two of them.
Give Up the Ghost by Megan Crewe
Cass McKenna much prefers ghosts over “breathers.” Ghosts are uncomplicated and dependable, and they know the dirt on everybody…and Cass loves dirt. She’s on a mission to expose the dirty secrets of the poseurs in her school. But when the vice president of the student council discovers her secret, Cass’s whole scheme hangs in the balance. Tim wants her to help him contact his recently deceased mother, and Cass reluctantly agrees. As Cass becomes increasingly entwined in Tim’s life, she’s surprised to realize he’s not so bad-and he needs help more desperately than anyone else suspects. Maybe it’s time to give the living another chance…
Shadowed Summer by Saundra Mitchell
Iris is ready for another hot, routine summer in her small Louisiana town, hanging around the Red Stripe grocery with her best friend, Collette, and traipsing through the cemetery telling each other spooky stories and pretending to cast spells. Except this summer, Iris doesn’t have to make up a story. This summer, one falls right in her lap.Years ago, before Iris was born, a local boy named Elijah Landry disappeared. All that remained of him were whispers and hushed gossip in the church pews. Until this summer. A ghost begins to haunt Iris, and she’s certain it’s the ghost of Elijah. What really happened to him? And why, of all people, has he chosen Iris to come back to?
I’d love to share my ghostly good fortune — so the Geek Girls will be giving away both books! The only catch is… you’ll have to wait until I read them first. (Don’t worry, I promise to not to leave too many Cheetos stains behind.)
And if you can’t wait to get your fear on, why not kick it old skool ghoul by reading one of these scary tales: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving or The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe? Both of them (and hundreds of other creeptastic classics) are available online at HorrorMasters.com.
But wait, how do you win our spooktacular prize? Just leave a comment below with the title of your own favorite (new or old ghoul) ghost story, and on November 1st (The Day of the Dead) we’ll bring the Random-nator back to life and choose one fiendishly fortunate friend for the win.

Hi there! My favorite ghost story is actually a novel—A Certain Slant of Light by Laura Whitcomb. Thanks!
Hmm. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is my all time favorite. However, since you already mentioned it, I guess my next favorite would be A Watcher in the Woods by Florence Engel Randall. Disney adapted it into a movie (I think it was in the 80’s), but I like the book better. =)
My favorite ghost story has always been “The Canterville Ghost.” I love to read the short story by Oscar Wilde and watch all of the various adaptations of it.
Someone already said my favorite ghost story, but I’ll go ahead and repeat it: A Certain Slant of Light by Laura Whitcomb. The writing is lovely and the story is so unexpected and haunting. In fact, now I’m in the mood to go reread it…
Hmm, it’s hard to pick just one book! Um, my most recent favorite is The Splendor Falls, which is ghost related, but also features magic. But I also loved The Hollow series by Christopher Golden.

I know its the wrong season but my favorite ghost story has always been A Christmas Carol. I love most of the one I have read but this one just always stood out.
My favourite ghost story is still the Goosebumps tale “A Night in Terror Tower”. It still gives me the creeps!
My favorite ghost story is totally Casper the Friendly Ghost which isn’t scary but still….
There are a lot of them listed that I really like, especially the Goosebumps books. I think the one that creeped me out the most, though, was the Goosebumps Night of the Living Dummy.
Oh, and I still have trouble looking into mirrors thanks to the Watcher in the Woods movie, but I saw it when I was only 3 so that might have something to do with it.
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson would be right up there as one of my favorite classic ghost stories.
I think my favorite ghost story remains the novel “Ghost Story” by Peter Straub.
I Don’t Know If It’s Considered A Ghost Story But The Legend Of Bloody Mary Is One Of My Faves Only Because So Many People Have Different Ideas To What Happened To Her Or Who She Is.. And I Like Hearing Them All!!
Oh, And I LOVE Casper… LOL!
Is this contest international? If it is, please enter me
My favourite ghost story is probably the mediator series by Meg Cabot - not that ghostly but really good! haha
Someone mentioned “A Christmas Carol”, which is Christmassy not Halloweeny (Halloweenie?), but still, it’s probably my fave.
I’m def looking fwd to these books — have you seen the trailer for Megan’s book? It so made me want to read it!
