We’re still busy applying sparkly eyeliner to the site but in the meantime, you can:

  • Read an excerpt from The Geek Girl’s Guide to Cheerleading.
  • Vote in our poll of best geeky spring break destinations.
  • Check out Speechless, Charity’s free short story about what happens when you keep quiet, and what happens when you don’t. While you’re there, enter our Speechless contest to win a giftcard from Starbucks!

And, since every cheerleader needs a team, we thought you might like to meet a couple members of ours. Check out the posts below for profiles on the geeks behind the scenes who helped us get up and running.

Thanks one and all. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Sean McNemar designed the header for Speechless and worked late into the night fixing a scary web host problem for us. He’s a long time member of the Granada Drive Gang and an even longer time geek.

“When I was in 3rd grade I was already taking computers apart and putting them back together. I liked to wear oxford shirts, khaki pants and ties to school too, and everyone there was cool with it. Then, in 4th grade, I moved to a new town. I think it was maybe my second day of school there when I found out people thought I was weird. I changed the way I dressed after that. Even though I didn’t look like a geek any more it didn’t change who I was on the inside. It didn’t change who I was or what I liked. Now I’m proud to be a geek.”

We’re proud of him too.

All cheerleaders needs a team and we geek girls are no exception. As we put the last of the sparkly eyeliner on our website, we thought we’d introduce you to a couple of the people who helped get us this far.

Up first is graphic artist, Matt Vance. Matt came up with the concept design for the website and is Darcy’s favorite son.

“I don’t really consider myself a geek,” he says. “Sure, I work with computers and I used to spend a lot of time online, but a geek? I was never just about one thing. Besides computers and gaming, I played baseball and music. These days I am making an effort to spend even less time online. I hang out with my real life friends more. I play drums in a death metal band and I just bought a new bike. I can’t wait for it to get warm so I can go out riding.”

Matt is a cancer survivor. I asked him if his experience with cancer had anything to do with his decision to pursue more offline activities. “Definitely,” he said. “I’m making up for lost time. There’s a whole lot out there in the world and I want to experience it all!”
